Day 5: Explore Tavistock...

Following a great breakfast, maybe spend this day at a different pace, in and around the delightful country town of Tavistock...

This market town can trace its history back over a thousand years to 974AD when the Benedictine Abbey was founded just outside the town, at Buckland. In the 19th Century Tavistock town grew into a thriving community because of the local mining industry, and between1803 and 1817 the Tavistock Canal was built to link the town with the nearby port.

Today the town is still thriving, being named the “Best Market Town in the Country” 2012 and the “West Country Best Food Town” in 2006. Take a wander around the side roads and soak up the character of this traditional English town. Using your holiday information pack we can help you to see more than just the usual tourist “lap” of this quintessential English Town.

After which, perhaps visit Buckland Abbey, just a few minutes drive from the town…………?

Buckland Abbey was given to John Russell (and the subsequent long line of Earls and Dukes of Bedford) by Henry VIII in 1539 and, in 1541, one of England’s most famous sons, Sir Francis Drake, purchased it from his arch-rival Richard Grenville. Drake lived there for 15 years until his death in 1596....

Alternatively, if the mood takes you, we can organise a diverse range of other activities such as golf, tree-surfing, kayaking, gliding or simply head up again on to the moor and follow another delightful walk we can provide.
