Day 5: Explore Boscastle...

Experience - Dartmoor and North & South Coast of Cornwall

Day 5: Explore Boscastle...

Today why not explore Boscastle? Dominated by a massive, naturally occurring sea wall, Boscastle was the natural choice for a harbour to give protection to local fishermen and trading boats from the fierce Atlantic breakers.

Stunning views reward a walk up to the top of the harbour wall, however we can also give you routes for a number of delightful stretches of coast-path and inland walks. In its heyday during the nineteenth century the harbour received coal, ironwork and limestone from South Wales, as well as fertilizers, timber, corn, wine and spirits. In exchange boats collected cargoes of slate, china clay and manganese ore from a mine in the Valency valley.

Your holiday information pack will pick out the many points of interest dotted around Boscastle which give clues to the town’s community, architectural and trading history – not to mention the Hardy literary connection! Of particular interest is the devastating flood of August 2004 when due to freak weather conditions a massive torrent of rainwater broke the river bank and swept cars, buildings and bridges away. It is amazing to compare pictures of the scene at the time and how Boscastle as a town and community has recovered….

We can also arrange both cliff-land and woodland wild-life walks, small-group guided tours of the nearby coast-line as well as guides who focus on smuggling, wreckers and geology.
