Trerice

Trerice

  • Elizabethan manor famed for its “barrel-roofed“ Great Chamber
  • Charming flowering gardens and old Cornish apple orchard
  • Unique lawnmower collection
  • Award-winning Tudor garden education project

Trerice is situated three miles from Newquay and is a grand Elizabethan manor built of buff-coloured limestone. Trerice remains little changed by the advances in building fashions over the centuries. The house is found in a quiet valley, approached by a narrow, winding lane.

Trerice is entered via a screens passage running between the porches on the west and east fronts, and from there you enter the huge Hall, lit by two-storied windows consisting of 576 panes of glass. The is a little Musicians“ Gallery above the door, from which you can peep down to the Hall. Apart from the great window, the other feature of the room is the splendid plasterwork on the ceiling and over the fireplace, which bears the date 1572. From the Hall, you descend into the Drawing Room, part of the original building, though much altered, and then on to the staircase. This was inserted in the early nineteenth century, over the original cesspit and the shaft of an old garderobe can be seen. There are also traces of the original circular stair.

There is little trace of the small enclosed gardens that used to surround the house until 1915. From the grassy court at the front of the house steps lead up to what was the bowling green and upper lawn. The garden to the south of Trerice has disappeared entirely. The grass is now planted with fruit trees in a 17th century pattern.

There is a National Trust shop and plant sales. Tea-room (licensed) in the Great Barn. Children“s menu. Tea-garden (licensed) They also have one holiday apartment set in the west wing of Trerice house with splendid views of the garden and surrounding countryside. Sleeps 2 people. Available for short breaks and week long bookings.
