St Mawes

  • Two sandy beaches at low tide
  • Castle and Gardens
  • Passenger Ferry to Place and Falmouth

St Mawes is one of best known sailing and fishing villages in Cornwall. In recent years it has become very exclusive and the opening of the Tresanton Hotel has bought many celebrity visitors to this quaint village.

St Mawes is hugely popular with the boating and yachting fraternity and boasts three boatyards with numerous moorings and anchorages for visiting yachtsman in and around the Roseland Peninsula.

The village itself is full of beautiful old fisherman’s cottages and if you explore the back streets you will enjoy the individuality and quirkiness of some of the cottages. The impressive views away from St Mawes are across to St Anthony’s Head and the lighthouse and out to sea across the Carrick Roads.

Being positioned within the gulf stream, the climate in St Mawes, is very mild all year round and during the summer temperatures reach that of the Mediterranean, as a result there are beautiful local gardens - Lamorran Gardens - with exquisite fauna and flora that are well worth a visit.

St Mawes Castle overlooks the coast on the opposite side of the river to Falmouth. The castle belongs to English Heritage and is open all year round, built in the 16th century as part of the coastal defenses. You can cross to Falmouth throughout the day on the St Mawes Ferry which runs a regular service throughout the year – weather dependant – this is a lovely trip to make and you can often spot dolphins in the bay.

There are many choices for places to eat in St Mawes all of which serve the freshest fish and shellfish and there are plenty of cream tea opportunities too! There are a couple of excellent art galleries, good local shops and a fantastic walk from St Mawes along to the church at St Just in Roseland.
