Powderham Castle is located in a unique, picturesque setting beside the Exe estuary. Six hundred years of history are contained within the walls of one of England´s oldest family homes.

Built in 1391 by Sir Philip Courtenay it has remained in the same family to this day, currently home to the 18th Earl of Devon. Having survived a great deal of damage during the Civil War, the Castle was restored and altered in later centuries. These days, visitors can marvel at the breathtaking medieval grand staircase and the stunning eighteenth century music room. The original Victorian Kitchen has recently been opened to the public, so visitors can now have a glimpse of life below stairs in the Earl´s household and appreciate how the 19th century kitchen would have been run.

The woodland garden in particular is worthy of note; plantings of daffodils, primroses and Devon violets make for a profusion of colour in the spring. Fallow deer graze in the Deer Park, and in summer visitors can ride the special tractor trailer cart to view them up close. Especially for the children is the new Secret Garden, full of animals of the soft and cuddly sort, including guinea pigs, rabbits, and pygmy goats.

Powderham Castle is a popular location for all sorts of events from large music concerts, local theatre performances to being a film location – the Oscar winning – ´Remains of the Day´ was filmed here. The Powderham Castle web site gives details of all current and future events and also of the shops at the Castle.
