Portwrinkle Beach

Portwrinkle Beach

  • Rock pools
  • Good access
  • Dogs allowed October to March

Portwrinkle beach itself has a little harbour, with shingle and fine sand at low tide, as well as numerous rock pools, making it particularly suitable for children - with easy pushchair access to the beach. Portwrinkle marks the western extremity of the long curving sandy arc of Whitsand Bay which reaches almost to Rame Head some 5 miles away to the east.

It was traditionally a fishing village and the old 17th century walls of the pilchard cellars are still standing, although they have been incorporated into housing.

The spectacular deserted beaches of Whitsand bay adjacent to Portwrinkle beach afford miles of walking where dogs are permitted all year round.

The east side of the beach is good for surfing although it is recommended for use by experienced surfers.

For the energetic, the South Cornish Coastal path passes Portwrinkle, leading west to Looe and east to Cremyll, from where a foot ferry will take you to Plymouth.

Dogs are allowed between October and March on Portwrinkle
