Polperro is a 13th century fishing village, originally belonging to the ancient Raphael manor mentioned in the Domesday Book. Fishing has been the principal occupation of its inhabitants for centuries, and pilchards were often caught in abundance to be sold far and wide to Mediterranean countries, although mainly Italy.

Only 4 miles from Looe in South East Cornwall is Polperro, a maze of lanes, alley ways and slate hung white washed fishermans cottages. Through the walkways – cars are not allowed - you will be led down to a picturesque and truly unspoilt harbour. Still a working port, where at high tide boats unload their catch and leave their pots and nets on the quays.

When Britain was at war with its neighbours in the 18th century, duty on many goods was increased considerably, encouraging the Polperro fishermen to smuggle goods such as tea, gin, brandy and tobacco across from Guernsey. The fishermen´s choir, is famous throughout Cornwall, and in season gives regular open air performances

Much favoured by artists & photographers alike, it has been the chosen site for many a film. A visit to the Polperro Heritage Museum, situated in the old "Pilchard Factory" will provide much of the history of this charming place.

The Polperro Boat Men operate various boat trips out of Polperro on a daily basis from approximately Easter until November, weather permitting. Half hour coastal trips leave the harbour every 5 - 10 minutes. The trips take in the beauty of the Cornish coastline, seeing birds and wildlife in their natural habitat, and although not guaranteed there is the occasional sighting of dolphins or basking sharks and other types of sea life. Boat trips to Looe and Fowey are also available.

For those who would like to do a spot of fishing there are two hour mackerel trips where you are taken just off the coast and can try your luck to catch a fish of two. With the experienced skipper Oli you will spend a very enjoyable couple of hours and hopefully bring back a few fish for dinner.
