This beautiful light and sunny gallery is the perfect place to display the distinctive hand blown glass of Malcolm Sutcliffe.

In November 2001, after a lot of searching for the right spot in Cornwall, Malcolm and Jean Sutcliffe moved the glass studio to a disused bakery in the historic old town of Penryn just outside Falmouth. The old bakery had been closed for over 26 years and it took about 6 months to convert the bakery into a glass making studio. A huge bread oven had to be dismantled, consisting of around 10,000 bricks and 10 tons of mortar and rubble, before the job of installing all the glass making equipment could begin.

All the glass is free blown, no moulds are used to shape the glass only wet newspaper, wooden blocks and the traditional glassmakers tools. Malcolm enjoys making bowls, vases, dishes and plates that have clean, smooth, simple shapes.

Since moving to Cornwall Malcolm has been doing more work without any of the figurative element just using colours, softly blended together, as in the sunrise, sunset and spray pieces.

Malcom also offers glass blowing lessons so that you can actually have a go yourself and master a new skill. Maximum students per session are 2 so the teaching and hands on experience is intensive and you will get a lot out of the lesson. You will come away with something you have actually made too.

One of the highlights is the large selection of beautiful glass Christmas baubles, the colours caught in the tree lights or candlelight are perfect.

Malcolm’s glass is sold widely in the uk and overseas and is also represented in various art galleries, museums and private collections.

The gallery is always open Wednesday to Friday 11am to 5pm and Saturday morning 10am to 1pm. It is often open on Monday and Tuesday too but do ring to check beforehand on 01326 377020.
