Spanning nearly 300 years of horticultural history, these magnificent gardens are set in East Devon´s picturesque Otter Valley.Bicton Park has over 60 acres of beautiful gardens with sweeping lawns, fragrant borders, water features and formal gardens.Features of the park include a lake and water garden, a formal Italian Garden dating from the early-18th century, a Secret Garden, the Hermitage, an American garden dating from the early-19th century and a Pinetum.There is also an Arboretum which contains some of the most majestic trees in the country. Discover the little house of shells, the romantic Hermitage, the secret garden, the lake, streams and woodlands.In addition there is a range of greenhouses and conservatories. The magnificent curved Palm House, formed from 18,000 pieces of glass, was built in 1815. It is 20 years older than the Palm House at Kew and is more daring in design.The Italian Garden was laid out in c.1735, reputedly to a design by Andre le Notre. The Palm House, one of the oldest and most beautiful curvilinear iron glasshouses, dates from c.1825-30. It was the first of many developments inspired by Lady Louisa Rolle, who also established the arboretum, pinetum, hermitage, American garden, shell house and fernery. She also built St. Mary´s Church where Queen Victoria, George VI and the late Queen Mother worshipped during visits to Bicton.A narrow-gauge railway offers scenic rides, and there are spacious indoor and outdoor play areas for children, as well as a large museum, restaurant, gift shop, garden centre and nature trail. Opening times are 10am – 6pm in the summer and 10am – 5pm in the winter, they are closed on Christmas Day and Boxing day.
