Day 4: Explore Fowey...

Experience - North, South and Far West of Cornwall

Day 4: Explore Fowey...

After a lovely breakfast and a leisurely start to the day, why not explore Fowey? It is not much of coincidence that the correct pronunciation of Fowey rhymes with ‘joy’ - it truly is a special place…

The town dates back many hundreds of years and the narrowness of the roads belie the fact that the town’s footprint came long before the motorcar... Narrow, winding streets, cottages - oft bedecked in flowers - intermix with quaint shops, pubs and restaurants. Fowey is a delight!

Fowey is very much a maritime port; and, with its spacious deep-water harbour, it has been a centre in the area for fishing, ship building, sailing and merchants. However, the heady days of pilchards, tin and copper are now long gone, leaving a sleepy, picturesque coastal town, steeped in character. In your holiday information pack we’ll pick out the many clues to Fowey’s interesting history not to mention literary connections with Daphne Du Maurier.

There are some stunning walks in the vicinity, many along the coast path which we can give you routes for. In addition we can arrange a wide selection of activities in and around Fowey, to include small boat, rib (either bare-boat or skippered), kayak-hire, perhaps a sailing experience – or you can opt to enjoy a guided tour of the coastline, by either rib or as part of a flotilla of canoes…You can’t get much closer to the river banks than that! (The Fowey River was also inspiration for Kenneth Grahame’s ‘Wind in the Willows’).

Whatever type of craft you choose, enjoy the fabulous estuary scenery and wildlife as the river valley is surrounded by pretty wooded slopes and water meadows, much of it owned by the National Trust. This is a prime area for spotting Heron, Wildfowl, Cormorants, even Kingfishers…Much is said about the beauty of the Fowey River, let us help you get out on the water, in a manner that suits you, and see rather more than many visitors!
