Day 4: Explore Dartmouth...

After a lovely breakfast why not head to charming, unspoilt Dartmouth – a beautiful estuary town steeped in maritime history, occupying the point where the delightful River Dart reaches the sea. Tightly packed along the western bank Dartmouth rises up above the river, as the many period buildings appear to jostle for their spot at this picturesque maritime town.

Dartmouth has always been known for its excellent deep water harbour and it is likely that as early as the Mesolithic period – around 10,000 to 4,000 BC – there was some form of very early settlement here. In later Celtic and Saxon periods it is believed trading across to Europe took place with small boats, which were beached on the mud-banks, although settlement was most likely inhibited by regular Viking raids.

However, by Norman times formal settlement in the area can be proved and by 1147 Dartmouth had become sufficiently important to be a gathering point for 164 ships leaving for the Second Crusade. With Britain’s rise as a trading nation, through Tudor and Stuart periods, so did Dartmouth’s prosperity; some of the buildings from this period still standing today.

Admire the steep wooded hillsides which run down to the river as an array of sailing boats and fishing vessles bob on their moorings. We can help you explore this delightful town, picking out the highlights from the surviving architecture as well as giving a deeper insight into the history of this atmospheric place.

There are some lovely walks in the area we can give you routes for as well as some beautiful villages and beaches in the vicinity, some with some particularly intriguing history.

We can also arrange motor and sailing boat hire, fishing trips, coastal and wildlife cruises, private charters, kayak and canoe hire, stand up paddle boarding as well as sailing tuition and experience days…..Back on terra firma, how about mountain biking, and, for the most adventurous, climbing and coasteering?
