Day 1: Explore The Valley of the Rocks, Lynton & Lynmouth...

After a lovely breakfast and a leisurely start to the day, perhaps spend this first day of your break exploring the dramatic Valley of the Rocks and the quaint little towns of Lynton and Lynmouth.

The Valley of the Rocks is a dry valley on the coast of north Devon, near Lynton. The valley may have been made dry by polar ice forcing a diversion of the East Lyn River and this makes the geology fascinating……. the rocks are 400 million years old! Evidence of Iron Age settlements has also been found here - dip into your holiday information pack to help guide you!

As a complete contrast, why not follow this with a trip to the quaint village of Lynmouth. This little 18th Century fishing village is located at the junction and estuary of the two rivers East and West Lyn. The authors Shelley and Blackmore both spent time here and the artist Gainsborough decided it was “the most delightful place for a landscape painter this country can boast”.

The beauty of the place was severely damaged in 1952 when 9” of rain fell in 24 hours and the raging torrent of water that cascaded down the steep-sided valley destroyed many homes and killed 34 people. The 18th century houses and quay survived and, over time, the valley has slowly recovered.

Lynmouth is linked to the little neighbouring town of Lynton by the famous Cliff Railway which was generously built and donated by George Newnes the publisher in 1890. Lynton has a strong Victorian character dominated by the imposing Town Hall, again donated to the town by Newnes.
