Day 2: Explore Port Isaac...

Experience - North Coast of Cornwall

Day 2: Explore Port Isaac...

Today why not take the short trip up the coast to Port Isaac, a particularly picturesque little fishing village North of Padstow?

Stunning coastal views and winding little lanes of 18th and 19th century cottages lead you down to a very pretty working harbour. At low tide there are normally two or three fishing boats lying on their side, helping to create the atmosphere of what many would consider to be the archetypal Cornish fishing village.

Port Isaac was a busy port from the Middle Ages to the mid-nineteenth century where, alongside fishing, cargoes of stone, coal, timber and pottery were loaded and unloaded. Your holiday information pack will pick out the many points of interest dotted around the village which hark back across the history of Port Isaac.

Today Port Isaac is also known for its starring role in several films and TV series, notably ‘Saving Grace’ and the comedy drama ‘Doc Martin’ where Martin Clunes’ as the irritable, tactless village Doctor plays havoc with life in the fictitiously named ‘Port Wenn’.

However, it is not just the setting which may seem a little familiar to you from prime-time TV, Port Isaac is also home to the ‘Fishermen’s Friends’ – the Cornish sea-shanty singers plucked from obscurity for that dream ‘million pound’ record deal. Some evenings during the season, this group of life-long singing friends gather in the centre of Port Isaac to delight locals and visitors alike. (If we can plan your visit around when we know they are performing, we will!)

There are several stunning coastal walks we can give you routes for as you savour the experience of visiting this picturesque point on the North Cornish coastline; stunning views, wind, sea and fresh air, all in abundance.

When booking your holiday with Classic Escapes discuss your leisure interests with your dedicated holiday organiser.

In the season we can also arrange fishing or scenic trips from Port Isaac harbour and, of course, pass on our lunch and evening meal recommendations, making reservations for you as appropriate.
