Built into the side of a granite cliff with some of the most stunning views in Cornwall, this open air theatre was the lifetime work and dream of a lady called Rowena Cade. Rowena bought the Minack headland for £100 in the 1920’s and set about building a house for herself and her mother using local granite. Having an interest in the arts and knowing that locally there was nowhere to perform for local groups, she found herself altering her garden to incorporate a stage area with seating above. This was no mean feat and with the help of two local Cornish craftsmen, they carved by hand the granite seating and stage.

Despite having to have a complete overhaul after the Second World War, the Minack retained its immense charm and its position is completely unique. Performances can be enjoyed by bringing your own picnic and cushions and the sun setting on Logan rock headland is a memorable sight. Cornwall is full of tucked away gems and this is certainly one of them.

The theatre is open all year round and has a wide range of performances, to find out either call or check their web sites for this years programme. There is free parking and a lovely coffee shop serving cream teas and light meals which you can also have as a takeaway while enjoying the performances.

There is an exhibition dedicated to the life of Rowena Cade and her work in producing the internationally famous Minack theatre with her own hands, a sturdy wheelbarrow and two willing Cornishmen.

It is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year you can also walk around the rockery gardens that have been planted with tropical succulents in keeping with Rowena´s original garden that was converted to the theatre.
